What is MySafe:California?

MySafe:California is a private, professional fire prevention and life safety organization. Our organization engages in community risk reduction programs throughout the State of California.

What is Community Risk Reduction?

Programs that reduce risk to the community are becoming know as “Community Risk Reduction,” or “CRR” initiatives. Typically developed and executed by fire/rescue agencies, the most common program involves home visits, including delivery of education and home inspection. MySafe:California is actively involved in CRR within the State of California. MySafe:California is careful to ensure it follows baseline standards as defined by the NFPA, USFA, as well as an independent fire/safety program called Vision 20/20. Our home safety educators utilize high technology software and other means to achieve measurable results. In addition, our educators will support CRR via distribution and installation of free smoke alarms to those in need.

What does the MySafe:California Website concentrate on?

The main MySafe:California website contains information relative to disaster- preparedness in the State of California. There is a complex mix of disaster threats throughout the State, but our primary focus includes information and materials related to wildfire and earthquake prevention, readiness, and survival. The dangers from fire, earthquake, terror attacks, and even floods are nothing to take for granted.

Are the other MySafe:California websites?

MySafe:California maintains a Facebook presence, a Twitter account, a Flickr account, Vimeo and YouTube for videos. In the future, we’ll be adding an online education campus. All of these components to our ecosystem are embedded within the MySafe:California web environment.

Who would use the MySafe:California website?

The MySafe:California website has been designed to be useful to three groups of people: first responders, teachers, and the general public. When first responders become partners, they gain access to a wide array of fire and life safety materials, including fire prevention materials for distribution to the public, safety initiatives, research materials, and other data useful to the overall process of fire prevention. In addition, becoming a partner gives fire departments the opportunity to request MySafe:California join them in community risk reduction programs, such as home inspections and free smoke alarm distribution and installation. The same types of benefits are available to teachers who become members of the MySafe:California fire/safety cadre. Finally, the website also has been designed for community involvement – meaning that our information and programs are available directly to the general public.

How often does the information in the MySafe:California website change?

The MySafe:California environment is ever-changing. Our team will continue to add material on a weekly basis – daily in some instances. As safety information is made available, we’ll post it here. As new videos are developed, we’ll publish them and issue a notification. Stay in touch and visit the site often.

What are the requirements for using the MySafe:California website?

The MySafe:California website has been designed to be fully “responsive,” meaning it will auto-adjust for any sized computing device. For the best visual experience, consider using a modern web browser and a computer display that supports a minimum of 1040 x 760 pixel resolution. MySafe:California has been tested with a wide array of browsers, including but not limited to IE 8, IE 9, Firefox 8 thru 14, Safari 4 – 6, Opera and Chrome. What happens if I can't see one of the videos that is included in the website?

If you have problems viewing any of our video content, we suggest you first do a test to see if you can view videos posted to YouTube and Vimeo. Our video content has been designed to use an Internet technology called HTML-5, rather than the now antique and outdated Flash solution you may have heard about. If you find you can view YouTube or Flash videos, but not those within our website, please contact us at support@mysafecalifornia.org If you cannot view videos on other streaming sites, check your browser for compatibility, or if viewing from work, check with your IT manager to see if sites that stream video have been blocked.

What type of Internet/web compliance can you attest to?

Here is our Internet Accessibility Statement – This site has been tested in a range of browsers and with screen reader software. MySafe:California uses semantic markup to assist screen reader users among others — site, page and block headings use navigation blocks are lists and so on. These tags are invisible to the site visitor. MySafe:California complies with the World Wide Web Consortium’s level 1, most of level 2 and some level 3. Through these guidelines we aim to comply with local laws regarding access to those with disabilities. We are currently working to improve the accessibility and usability of MySafe:California. At present there are still some tables used for layout, but in general presentation (using style sheets) is separated from content. We welcome feedback, particularly reports of any inaccessible content. Please see our contact page for additional information. At present we don’t specify access keys, but we intend implementing them for a future release of MySafe:California. There is a link before each side block, which allows screen reader users to skip the block. Note, the link is hidden from graphical browsers. Many links have title attributes that describe the link in greater detail, unless the text of the link already fully describes the target (such as the headline of an article). If a link has an access key this will be announced in the link title. Whenever possible, links are written to make sense out of context. There are no javascript: pseudo-links. All images use the alt attribute to provide alternate text where appropriate; images that are purely decorative contain a null alt attribute. Images, such as maps, that present complex information have a longdesc attribute linking them to a text description of the image content. MySafe:California is built using valid XHTML for markup and uses CSS for presentation. In addition, MySafe:California is Section 508 compliant, meaning that individuals with disabilities related to vision or hearing may be able to access the data within the site using approved website “readers” or other tools. Our videos include Section 508 approved closed captioning, and our podcasts are available with associated transcripts, so that people may read them should they have difficulty hearing them. How do I report a bug in the MySafe:California website?
